RESIDENTS of Ago Iwoye, Ilishan and its environs have appealed to Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun to urgently fix the deplorable Ilishan – Ago Iwoye road.
The residents, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), expressed concern that the road had not been fixed for over 15 years in spite of promises by past administrations.
Ilishan -Ago Iwoye road links Ikenne Local Government Area with Ijebu North Local Government Area of the state.
Mr Samson Okulaja, a resident of Ago Iwoye, explained that there had been promises by previous administrations in the state to reconstruct the road but it never happened.
Okulaja stated that the bad condition of the road had affected economic growth of the communities in Ijebu/Remo axis of the state.
He noted that the major economic activity in the area remained timber and semi processed planks, most of which came from Ijebu lgbo axis for delivery in Lagos.
“It is so pathetic that more often, both the load and the carriers terminate their journey on one of the three bridges on this road.
“To this effect, the economic activities on the Ilisan -Ago Iwoye road have, for too long, remained dormant, which is not too good.
“Other economic activity that is facing challenges orchestrated by the poor condition of this road is the movement of our agro products.
“The central market in the entire Nigeria for Kolanut is Mamu market in Ago lwoye. This is the only market throughout Nigeria where both the buyers of Kolanut from the far north and the sellers from the entire south relate.
“All the sellers from Remo axis must pass through this death trap to transport their products to the market in Mamu,” he said.
He appealed to Gov. Abiodun to urgently come to the rescue of the residents and indigenes of Ilisan and Ago Iwoye by reconstructing the road.
He explained that the state of the road posed a great danger to the lives of the innocent students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye who used the road often.
In his submission, Mr Taiwo Nodiru, also a resident of Ago Iwoye, expressed disappointment over the terrible state of the road, saying that most vehicles had stopped plying the road.
Nodiru explained that a journey of 15 minutes would now take more than an hour, saying that many lives of students and staff of OOU had been lost due to the bad condition of the road.
“OOU community will benefit greatly if the road is completed as many of their staff and students can live in Sagamu, Ikene, Iperu and Odogbolu and work in OOU Ago Iwoye because it will take them 20 minutes to drive to the school from their homes,” Nodiru said.
He stated that economic activities around Ilisan, Iperu, Irolu, Ijebu Ilesha and Ago Iwoye would pick up and improve greatly if the road was completed.
He appealed to governor Abiodun to ensure that the road was given adequate and immediate attention.
Alhaji Kamaldeen Ibrahim, a resident of Ilisan in Ikenne Local Government Area, said that Ago Iwoye farm settlement was also affected, saying farm products could not be transported from the farm settlement to other part of the state. (NAN)
