Russian border authorities killed an armed man in a gunfight on Friday on the border with Ukraine, a Russian national security agency said.

The man was in a group with two other armed individuals who had been attempting to illegally cross into Russian territory, the Federal Security Service (FSB) said in a statement.

The group opened fire against the Russian authorities, and the man was killed “as a result of the return fire,’’ the statement said.

The two other men in the group fled back into Ukrainian territory, it said, without specifying where the incident occurred.

The situation on the Russian-Ukrainian border remains tense as pro-Russian separatist groups have been fighting against the Ukrainian military for more than six years.

Ukraine says Russia has been directly involved in the conflict. Russia denies that allegation.

Relations between Russia and Ukraine fell to an all-time low in early 2014 as Ukraine ousted its pro-Russian president and Russia responded by annexing Ukraine’s southern Crimea region.

The conflict in eastern Ukraine, near the Russian border, erupted shortly after the Crimea annexation.

More than 13,000 people have been killed in the conflict, according to estimates by the United Nations.(dpa/NAN)
