THE representatives of the International Oil Companies, IOCs, have stated that gas is an integral part of Africa’s energy transition.

The officials, who represented Chevron, SNEPCo, ENI, TotalEnergies, Equinor and Tsavo Oilfielf Services, at the 6th Sub-Saharan African International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference, SAIPEC on Tuesday in Lagos noted that gas will continue to be top priority in Africa’s energy transition, as Nigerian Gas will continue to be a good source of fuel.

The discussions centred on finding a lasting solution to providing the large energy needs of the teeming African population while keeping an eye on the Net Zero target.

The speakers at the panel session headed by Elizabeth Rogo, chief executive officer, president, east Africa, Africa Energy Chamber, had Elohor Aiboni, managing director, SNEPCo Nigeria, Bobby Hulett, director and PSC, Chevron Nigeria Limited, Victor Bandele, deputy managing director, TotalEnergies, Charles Nwoko, director, Equinor, and Saadoun Banoori, general manager, Upstream, ENI Companies in Nigeria as panelist discussants.

The panelists agreed that Africa didn’t need the Co26 declaration to start the decarbonization process, gas flaring as Africa and Nigeria have always understood the need to find a better way of generating energy resources without destroying the environment.

Bandele noted that removing or reducing gas flaring will help set the standard for the future.

The event, which was hosted by the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria, PETAN, had delegates from major oil companies across Sub-Sahara Africa to help chart a course for Africa’s evolving oil, gas and energy industry as the world seeks a halt to fossil fuel production.

The annual event, organised for Africa and Sub Saharan Africa energy community, is aimed at connecting, collaborating, creating, and sharing ideas, while providing an engagement platform for all the key stakeholders in the oil and gas industry in Sub Saharan Africa.

The event also provides opportunities to leverage on experiences and ensure regional collaborations between National Oil companies, NOCs, international oil companies, IOCs, multinational and indigenous service providers in Africa.

The speakers and delegates, who were drawn from over 25 countries, will set an agenda for Africa’s evolving oil, gas and energy industry. According to the programme of events for this year’s strategic conference, the speakers and heads of NOCs are from Uganda, Mozambique, Namibia, Gabon, Mauritania, Somaliland, Angola, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Ghana Liberia, Kenya among others.

The SAIPEC annual event, which opened on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 will end on Thursday, February 24, 2022.
