A security guard escaped unhurt when a three-storey building located at Adabor Junction, collapsed in the Ashi area of Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

The Guardian learnt that the building, which housed a pharmacy, supermarket and church, collapsed in the early hours of yesterday, destroying goods worth millions of naira.

Residents in the area said no life was lost in the incident, as the security guard, who was the only one on the ground when the incident happened, escaped unhurt.

One of them, Sade Aderibigbe, said: “We suddenly heard a loud bang at the midnight. We were scared because we thought it was armed robbers.

“We rushed out to the scene, on getting there, we discovered that the building had sunk and collapsed.”

Another resident, Tunde Abulesowo said the land on which the building was erected was formerly a cemetery before it was sold.

“The building was built during former Governor Akala’s administration. When the land was sold, all corpses in the cemetery were exhumed before the building was erected.

“The building had been showing signs of cracks before it came down, millions of goods and property were trapped in the rubble.

“We are making efforts to salvage the goods and prevent hoodlums from gaining access to it so that they won’t cart the goods away. We have called the police and officials of the Ibadan zonal office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and they are yet to arrive,” he said.
