AS Plateau residents continue to agitate for the conduct of local government elections, Gov Simon Lalong has said that government was consulting with security agencies before deciding on the next line of action.

“We appreciate the anxieties and concerns over the delay in conducting local government elections, but the delay is not deliberate,” Lalong said on Tuesday in Jos, in a special broadcast to intimate citizens of developments in the state.

He said that security concerns had delayed the exercise, adding, however, that government was consulting with the security agencies on the way forward.

“As soon as we obtain the nod to go ahead, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) will swing into action and conduct elections,” he said.

Lalong said that government had created new chiefdoms, districts, village areas and also reviewed the emoluments of traditional rulers.

According to him, some chiefdoms were also upgraded from second class to first class, while those created in 2006 but later annulled by the immediate past administration, had been restored.

He named the upgraded chiefdoms to include Aten in Ganawuri and the Anaguta Chiefdom in Jos North.

The newly created chiefdoms, he said, are Ibaas in Barkin Ladi, Ngas in Kanke, and Byan in Langtang South. (NAN)
