Nnenna Agnes Nnamani, wife of Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, former governor Enugu State, has been buried in grand style on Friday, November 27, in Amaiyi Amakpu-Agbani, Enugu State

THE body of the late Nnenna Agnes Nnamani, wife of Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, former governor of Enugu State, has been laid to rest in a grand ceremony in her husband’s compound in Amaiyi, Amakpu-Agbani in Enugu State. Many prominent Nigerians, sons and daughters of Enugu State attended the burial ceremony to pay their last respects to Nnenna and commiserate with the entire Nnamani family. Nnenna, 47, died in a hospital in Orlando, Florida, United States, on September 4, following complications from sickle cell disease and ruptured cerebral aneurysm.

The funeral service on Friday, November 27, which was conducted by Anglican Archbishop E.O. Chukwuma of Enugu Eccelestical province, was witnessed by other clerics from other Christian denominations including Catholics and Methodists. Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate president, who was chief of staff when Nnamani was the governor of Enugu State and incumbent Governor Ifeanyi Uwuanyi and his entourage from the state government and former commissioners, who served when Nnamani was the governor of the state also attended the burial ceremony.

In his emotion-laden eulogy, former governor Nnamani recalled how he met his wife when he was doing his youth service in Ohafia, Imo State, the home town of the late Nnenna. He paid glowing tribute to his late wife extolling her virtues as a good wife and a great mother of their three children namely Chimaroke Ferguson, Chinero Yobachi and Nina Stacy.

A brief biography of Nnenna in the funeral brochure stated that she pursued a fulfilling career in nursing. She was drawn to nursing by her natural compassion for the weak and infirm. As a professional care-giver, however, she had a broader interest in providing healthcare intervention and guidance to critical care patients, focusing on the promotion of education and disease control.

This passion propelled her continual quest for the acquisition of knowledge and new skills through higher education and training programmes. Among the topflight schools she attended were the Bethune-Cookman University, Daytona Beach, Florida, Seminole State College, Sanford, and Florida Hospital Health Science in Orlando, Florida.

In the course of her extensive training, Nnenna developed interest in the importance of building a nurse-client relationship, client rights, therapeutic communication, critical thinking and evidence-based practice. She also garnered extensive experience of nearly 1000 clinical hours in some healthcare facilities in the city of Florida, while performing client care through assessments, IV insertions, medication administration, blood draws, airway suctioning and urinary catheterisations.

Her working career spanned many allied healthcare fields including practicing as registered nurses, medical technician, tutor/mentor and business office manager.

She was a member of a number of professional bodies among them the Unit Practice Council, Nigerian Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing, where she served as the treasurer, Bethune-Cookman Investment Association and Phi Sigma Theta National Honor Society.

Nnenna was a devoted Christian and attended a non-denominational church every Sunday. She was committed to the eradication of child poverty and as the first lady of Enugu State, she championed and supported the motherless babies homes.

She derived joy from competition and rising to meet challenges. She was self-driven, industrious and channeled her energies into success in her endeavours. She believed that anything is possible with great concentration, ambition and enthusiasm.
