A court in Seoul on Monday declined a U.S. request to extradite the operator of one of the world’s largest child pornography websites.

Local media and the national press agency Yonhap reported that the court decided not to extradite Son Jong Woo to facilitate South Korea’s own investigation into the sexual abuse of children in connection to the Website “Welcome to Video.’’

The website was shut down in March 2018, while it operated via the dark web, a hidden part of the internet, and functioned with bitcoin payments.

According to the U.S. Justice Ministry, the investigation unearthed 8 terabytes of data, including 250,000 pornographic videos of children.

Son has been indicted on nine points in the U.S., while around the world, 337 users of the website have been arrested and charged.

Son already served a sentence of 18 months until April of this year in South Korea.

He was recently taken back into custody following the U.S. extradition request; though media reports said he was released again. (dpa/NAN)
