THE Confederation of African Football, CAF, will increase the number of teams participating in the group stages of the CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup to 16 from next season. Currently, only eight teams participate in the group stages of both competitions, with two groups comprising four teams each.

According to Completesportsnigeria.com, Issa Hayatou, CAF president, in his speech at the CAF Ordinary General Assembly in Mexico City, said the number of teams would be increased to four groups with four teams each starting from next year.

“We take advantage of the experiences of FIFA, UEFA, CONCACAF, AFC, of which we have a Memorandum of Understanding to equip clubs with the minimum necessary to allow them to be engaged in the inter-club competitions of CAF in the near future. Competitions will be subjected to major reforms as of next year, considering the introduction of group phases with 16 clubs instead of eight, like it is now.”

The draw for the group stages of this year’s Champions League and Confederation Cup will be staged in Cairo on May 24. Nigerian champions Enyimba are one of the eight teams that have qualified for the group stages of the CAF Champions League.
