ADEGBOYE Onigbinde, former Super Eagles coach and Lead City University, Ibadan, have formed a partnership to address the problems militating against the development of football at the grassroots level in the country.
Part of the agreement between the two parties is that the coach will lead the proposed Institute for the Development of Football at the LCU’s Department of Physical and Health Education. Explaining the objectives of the institute, Onigbinde said that the project was designed to create decent football culture for the nation and that it would be implemented in two phases.
The first phase will be the establishment of a soccer academy which will focus on the basis for having a career in football. The second phase will be establishment of a short-term and long-term football development programme that will offer certificate in various aspects of football management and professionalism.
“Focus will be on specialised training for referees, coaches, soccer administrators, physiological fitness trainers, paramedics, soccer facilities maintenance and store keeping. This is the first of its kind in the academic environment, and we are not only going to prepare the youngsters for a football teams but taking care of their future through academic and vocational experience.”
