NO fewer than 300 students from 16 Nigerian universities are expected to storm the Redemption camp of Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Lagos, later this month to participate in a sports fiesta which is part of the 74th birthday anniversary of Enoch Adeboye, a pastor and general overseer of the church.

The games- volley ball and futsal competitions- will run from Monday. February 29 to March 5.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, on Thursday, February 18, Paul Bankole, director of Sports, Redeemer’s Sports Directorate, RCCG, said that the games, which would be guided by 70 officials, would be sponsored by governors Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State and Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State, who are the spiritual sons of Adeboye.

Bankole disclosed that the choice of volleyball and futsal games for the celebration was to underscore the importance of the game of volleyball to the GO, who played and coached the sport while he was at the University of Lagos.

He said aside the economic and health importance of the games, futsal and foot volley could be easily played by everyone, everywhere – outdoor and on the grass.

Bankole said he had no doubt that the games were capable of producing future Olympians.

‘We are aware that there are thousands of potential Olympic stars and we believe with the backing of the NOC we will produce these athletes,” he said.
