Omatseye Nesiama, a member of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Technical and Competitions Commission, on Wednesday commended Raymond Ekevwo for winning a gold medal at the ongoing African Games.

Ekewvo clinched the gold medal with a time of 9.96 seconds, which makes him the second Nigerian male sprinters to go sub-10 seconds this year.

Cote d’Ivoire’s Cisse Arthur won the silver medal with a time of 9.97 seconds, while Utseoritse Itsekhiri won bronze medal with a time of 10.02 seconds

Nesiama told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the sub-10 feat recorded by the young Ughelli-born athlete was worthy of commendation.

“It is exciting, these were athletes discovered during my time as the Technical Director at the youth level maturing over time now.

“It goes to show they were discovered in their true age and have been followed up appropriately over time,” he said.

Nesiama, also an International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) licensed manager, said that he hoped that the athletes would be given the needed support for them to continue to excel.

“I hope we can continue to make our sprinters podium finishers at the World Championships this year and the Olympics scheduled for next year,” he said.

He, however, advised the athletes to continue to remain focused and determined.

“They should keep their heads low. They should know that to get up is not as hard as to maintain the height attained.

“Therefore, they should leave the politics of the sports to sports administrators and always focus on the next race and how to exceed the already recorded performance,” he said. (NAN)
