Assembly moves to pass bill establishing Anambra State Sports Development Commission

THE Anambra State House of Assembly on Tuesday, August 28 passed a motion to establish the Anambra Sports Development Commission.

Leading the debate, Victor Jideofor Okoye, the member representing Anambra West Constituency, said the bill sought to guide, discipline and develop sporting activities in the state.

Okoye emphasised that establishing Sports Development Commission would help to saddle school principals with the responsibility of identifying young talents, train and develop them in different sporting disciplines.

“It will help to revive the spirit of sports, promote unity and oneness,” he said.

Paschal Agbodike, the member representing Ihiala1 Constituency and Chairman House Committee on Youth and Sports, maintained that establishing the Commission would help to regulate sporting activities in the state.

He added: “sports will help to create employment and as a lucrative business generate, revenue for the state’’.

Supporting the motion, Peter Ibida, the member representing Njikoka 2 constituency, said that establishing sports commission would strengthen benefits of sports, which would be mental and physical development, entertainment, pride and unity.

He added that this would facilitate and rehabilitate our sports equipment and provide standard stadiums for sporting activities in the state.

At the end of the debate, Rita Maduagwu, the speaker of the House, called for voice vote and the bill was referred to House Committee on youth and sports, who would be expected to report back to the House in two weeks.
