SOLOMON Dalung, minister of Sport and Youth Development, has apologised to Nigerians for the failure of the Nigerian Super Eagles to qualify for the 2017 African Cup of Nations to be hosted by Gabon, next year.

Dalung gave his apology in his tweets on Wednesday, March 30.

The minister said that the country had no good reason for failure to qualify if plans had been properly put in place.

“After this abysmal performance at AFCON qualifiers it’s important we return to the drawing board to plan the future of football in Nigeria,” Dalung twitted, adding: “Nigerians cannot accept any reason for failure from anybody so we either deliver or we give way to those who can deliver success.”

The Nigerian team was defeated in the must-win qualifying match against Egypt on Tuesday, March 29 night by a lone goal. The two teams had played a draw, 1-1, at the first encounter of the hearer contest played in Kaduna on Friday, March 25.

Nigeria, especially, needed to win the second leg to have any hope of qualifying for the AFCON. It failure to qualify makes it the second time in succession that Nigeria would fail to make it to the African contest.

In any case, Egypt, its waterloo, had failed to qualify for the champion in the past three previous editions.
