THE maiden Gov. Seriake Dickson’s Invitational Para Soccer Tournament has kicked-off in Bayelsa with four states participating.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the four states in the competition are Bayelsa, Bauchi, Osun and Rivers.

The tournament is holding at the Handball Court of Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Yenagoa.

In the opening game on Tuesday, Bauchi thrashed Osun 7-2.

Mr Patimidi Tukuru, Bayelsa Sports Director, represented by Hans Egbe, Head of Organising Committee, Bayelsa State Sports Council, said the competition was to give the physically challenged the opportunity to demonstrate their energies.

“The aim is also to eradicate polio in the system and give the people a sense of belonging as well as help them to be better in their future career,” he said.

Tukuru commended the players’ performance at the zonal elimination of the 19th National Sports Festival and noted that the sport was barely a year since its acceptance at National Sports Festival.

He restated Bayelsa Government’s commitment to the promotion of the game at highest level, adding that the players should be focused.

The second game between Rivers and Bayelsa was slated for 3.30 p.m., while the final game to make the end of the competition would be holding on Wednesday. (NAN)
