The Nigeria Amputee Football Federation (NAFF) says the forthcoming National Amputee Football Championship will be a measure to restore passion to the sport and identify skillful players for the World Cup.

The NAFF President, Suleiman Isah, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the championship to hold from June 25 to June 28 in Abuja, would be open to affiliated state associations.

Isah, who said that the competition would take place at the National Stadium, urged the affiliated associations to register early to enable the local organising committee to tidy up preparations.

“Since we came on board, we have been trying to revive amputee football, and the forthcoming championship is a major platform to bring the associations’ teams together.

“The championship will accommodate our affiliated bodies because amputee football has suffered dearth of activities, and it has really affected its development and the footballers’ career,’’ he said.

He added that the football event would be used for preparations for the 2018 World Amputee Football Federation-organised Cup scheduled for Mexico in October.

“The World Cup is coming up this year, and we will be taking part; so, there is need to start in-house preparations by holding such a national event to bring out players.

“Although I understand there is a national team, we want to throw the floor open for players to exhibit their skills for us to know their current forms.

“We are expecting teams across the country; some state associations have not had the opportunity to feature in national football championships because such a forum has not come up,’’ he added.

According to Isah, the championship will create an enabling environment to identify skillful footballers who will be considered in the national team ahead of the world cup. (NAN)
