Nigerian-born basketball player, Calistus Anyichie, drowns at Waterfall Park

BINGHAMTON University has announced the death of a student-athlete, Nigerian-born basketball player, Calistus Anyichie. He was said to have died in a drowning accident.

On its verified Twitter handle, the University mourned the 19-year-old, who was a member of the men’s basketball team and majored in political science.

The President of the University, Harvey Stenger in a public statement said,  “A talented young person has been tragically taken from us. This is a heartbreaking loss for our community. We will do all that we can to be there for his family, for the team and everyone who knew Calistus.”

Director of Athletics at the University, Patrick Elliott said, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Calistus,” “Calistus was a bright and engaging young man with an infectious smile. He loved his academic studies at Binghamton and embodied the exceptional spirit of being a student-athlete at our University. This is a heartbreaking tragedy. Our sincere condolences go out to his family, teammates and fellow student-athletes.”

Anyichie drowned on Sunday at Buttermilk Falls State Park in Ithaca, New York, reports Ithaca Journal.

The newspaper revealed that emergency crews pulled an unconscious man from the water in Buttermilk Falls State Park on Sunday.

The man, described as “college age,” was found at the base of a 15-foot bank, and crews used a rope system to pull him out of the ravine.

Ithaca firefighters were dispatched at around 5 p.m. for a call of a “possible drowning” at the 300 block of West King Road at Upper Buttermilk State Park. – Punch
