Obiano Unity Cup tourney begins at Rojenny Stadium, Oba

GOVERNOR Willie Obiano on at the weekend Oct. 6, 2017 kick started the 2017 Unity Cup, involving virtually all communities in Anambra State.

The event is holding at the Rojenny International Stadium, Oba, near Onitsha.

The tournament, the 3rd in the series, would rally not less than 179 communities, as well as teams from military and para-military, the Muslim community and non-indigenes.

Governor Obiano said shortly before the kick-off, that the teams were selected as a way of fostering unity among the various segments of the state including indigenes and non-indigenes.

He said the winners would go home with N1million prize-money while the second and third place winners would get N500, 000 and N300, 000, respectively.

According to him, the tournament is expected to produce talented footballers that will constitute the Anambra FC that the state government plans to float via the Public Private Partnership, PPP, arrangement early next year.

The governor added that the government had since factored that into the 2018, budget.

He added that seed money for the training of no fewer than 1,720 youths across various entrepreneurship areas would soon be disbursed.

According to him this will commence when the appropriation bill is passed.

He urged the youths to shun acts that could mar their future as well as to support his second term bid.

Gov. Obiano re-assured them that he had a comprehensive agenda for their well-being.

Earlier, Uju Nwogu, commissioner for Youths, Entrepreneurship and Sports Development, Uju Nwogu noted that creation of jobs for youths impacted positively on the Obiano security initiative.

“This has helped in keeping the youths off the streets.’’

She observed that governor’s support toward the growth of sports in the state had encouraged, the state athletes to go all out to win laurels at national and international sporting competitions.

Member representing Idemili South Council Area, Chuka Ezenwune commended Gov. Obiano for remaining true to his promise to cater for the welfare of the youths.

In an opening match of the tournament, Awka Etiti defeated Ojoto 3-2.
