English Premier League club Chelsea and Championship club Stoke City have heaped plaudits on their Nigerian defender Kenneth Omeruo and midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo respectively following their impressive win against Iceland.

The News Agency of  Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles recorded a 2-0 win over Iceland at the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup match played at the Volgograd Arena on Friday.

Ahmed Musa grabbed both goals as the Super Eagles bounced back from the 2-0 loss to Croatia in their first game.

Omeruo was handed his first start of the competition by Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, as part of a three- man defence and he rewarded the German coach with a fine performance.

Though he had a hand in the penalty conceded by Tyronne Ebuehi which was missed by Gyfil Sigurdsson, Omeruo did well in helping the Super Eagles ward off the threat of the Iceland forwards.

”What a performance from @omeruo22!  #NGAISL,” reads a tweet on the club’s official Twitter handle.

The 24-year-old joined Chelsea in January 2012 but is yet to make his official debut for the club.

Instead, he has spent time on loan at five different clubs; ADO Den Haag in the Dutch Eredivisie, Middlesbrough ( English Championship), Kasimpasa and Alanyaspor (Turkish outfits).

He has been capped 38 times by Nigeria.

Similarly, English Championship club Stoke City have congratulated their new signed Etebo on his performance in Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Iceland at the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup at the Volgograd Arena on Friday.

Etebo signed a five-year deal with Stoke City before the start of the tournament and has been one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the World Cup in Russia.

“Congratulations Etebo! Soaring with the Super Eagles!!,” Stoke City tweeted on the club’s official Twitter handle on Saturday.

Etebo who has flourished playing in midfield for the Super Eagles alongside Mikel Obi and Wilfred Ndidi is expected to keep his place in the starting line-up when Nigeria take up Argentina in their last group game.

Nigeria are second in Group D with three points from two games and must beat Argentina to qualify for the round of 16.

Croatia lead the group with six points while Argentina and Iceland are tied on one point after two games. (NAN)
