MRS Oluwabukola Awoyeni, a Nollywood actress known as Arugba, has urged parents to stop discriminating among their children.
Arugba, a filmmaker and singer, gave the advice during an event to mark the 2022 International Day for the Girl Child in Badagry, Lagos, on Tuesday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was organised by Youth Artisan Foundation with the theme: “Our Time is Now, Our Right, Our Future.”
She said that every child is important and should not be discriminated.
According to her, don’t rate any child higher than the other, you don’t know who will be the biggest among them.
“If all your children are girls, don’t look down on them or think you don’t have children, only God knows what they will become in future.
“What a boy child can do, a girl child can do better, both of them can also work hand in hand to achieve something great,” she said.
Arugba said the girl child’s voice must be protected and promoted.
“You should be confidence of yourself, let your no be no and yes, yes.
“There are lots of responsibility on you, face your future and your education,” she said.
Mrs Funke Oyedeji, one of the teachers, said the girl child had a special place in every home.
Oyedeji advised them not to be intimidated or speechless in the face of humiliation.
She charged them to be women of passion adding that they should not be used as sex tools.
In his remarks, Mr Oladapo Sanni, the Executive Director, Youth Artisan Foundation, said that the event was organised to celebrate the girl child.
“We discovered that many girl children are not being celebrated when it comes to their day.
“Today, being International Day fo the Girl Child, we have to bring them together to celebrate them and make them feel worthy in the community and society at large.
“We should make sure we celebrate our girls, no girl child is a waste, work on them and they will be great,” he said.
He said the event was sponsored by Union Bank, Airtel and Lagos Pad Bank.
NAN reports that the event was attended by many private schools in Badagry and outside the town. (NAN)
