IN order to resolve the lingering crisis between Jukun ethnic group in Taraba State and Tiv either group in Benue State, the federal government has decided to mark the boundary of the two states.
The government believed that this will facilitate the implementation of all the resolutions jointly arrived at by the two states government aimed resolving the crisis which has lingered on.
The federal government in a communiqué issued on Wednesday, September 4, after the meeting with the governors of the two states resolved that there should be immediate cessation of hostilities to pave way for peace building efforts and that the two governors should make strong pronouncement condemning the crisis and to visit the affected communities as a confidence building measure.
The communiqué recommended that there should be massive deployment of security forces for intensive patrol and surveillance of the affected communities to checkmate the excesses of criminals and enforce law and order on the border corridors of Taraba and Benue states. It also urged the state governments to empower the restive youths as a way of reducing unemployment and make them useful members of the society.
“The issue of criminality such as banditry, kidnapping and armed robbery were some of the causes of the crisis. The crisis is purely the internal affairs of Taraba State and not between Benue and Taraba states. The crisis has brought economic activities to a halt and has led to loss of valuable lives, wanton destruction of property and displacement of communities from their homes. The Jukun and Tiv communities are desirous of peaceful co-existence,” the communique noted.
The meeting, which was attended by Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation, Darius Ishaku, governor of Taraba State and Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue State, attributed the crisis to to lack of clear boundary demarcation between the warring communities.
The meeting also had in attendance: deputy governors of the two states, speakers of the houses of assembly, other political leaders and traditional leaders from the two states.
