Enugu govt. will continue to support FRSC for safety of residents says Gov. Ugwuanyi

Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State says that his administration will continue to support the Federal Road Safety Corps for safety of residents in the state.

Ugwuanyi made the promise during the 2018 Ember Month Safety Campaign Flagg-off on Wednesday in Enugu.

The governor, who was represented by Mr Uwakwe Azikiwe, the Senior Adviser on Special Duties to the governor, said that the state government would continue to make sure that all roads in the state were safe for road users.

He called on every road user to obey traffic rules as well as avoid taking drugs and alcohol while driving on the road.

He urged the citizens to always caution drivers against reckless driving on the roads so as to arrive to their destination safely.

Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, represented by Corps Commander, Rita Monye said that the corps had resolved to use the media and all public enlightenment to educate road users on the need to be careful while driving.

He urged road users not to attach crashes to other causes or belief but should obey all traffic rules.

Oyeyemi urged motorists to avoid driving with defective eyesight as the corps operational strategies lined up for the 2018 ember month campaign were to enforce safety of roads.

He called on all road safety stakeholders to cooperate in reducing the high number of crashes on Nigerian roads.

He said there was need for drivers to change from old number plate to new one, have highway codes and drivers Licence so as to have uniformity of the corpse Licensing scheme.

Mr Samuel Obayemi, the Zonal Commanding Officer, represented by Deputy Commander Chinyere Nwagbaoso, said that the FRSC in Enugu had resolved to achieve 15 per cent reduction on road crashes and 30 per cent fatality reduction.

Obayemi said that this was in line with Corps Corporate Strategic goals in 2018 meeting of the United Decade of Action 2020 and Global best practice.

The Enugu Sector Commander, Kalu Ogbonnaya said that the Sector’s focus in the ember month campaign was on overloading, over speed, tyre violation and reckless driving.

Ogbonnaya said that the corps had already created mobile courts with magistrates for quick dispensation of justice on roads’ offenders. (NAN)
