PRESIDENT Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has extended heartfelt condolences to the Chukwumerije family as well as the government and people of Abia state on the death of Senator Uche Chukwumerije on April 19. Jonathan also commiserates with the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria over the passage of Senator Chukwumerije who was an ardent believer in national unity, peace, political stability and progress.

“The president joins them in mourning the late patriot and  nationalist who has left behind an impressive legacy of discipline, honesty, integrity and hard work in public service,” A statement signed by Reuben Abati, spokesman of the president on media and publicity, said, adding, “President Jonathan believes that the late Senator Chukwumerije, who had a distinguished career as a journalist, social critic, Minister of Information and Senator, will be long remembered for his dedication and passion for a just and equitable society.”

As the nation mourns him, the President urged Senator Chukwumerije’s family, friends and associates to honour his memory by continually upholding the values and principles which he lived for and never stopped fighting for till his death.

President Jonathan prays that God will comfort all who mourn him and grant his soul perfect peace, it said.

Also, Willie Obiano, Anambra State Governor, paid tribute Monday to the departed Senator Chukwumerije, saying he was a presidential material that could have been harnessed but for the age factor.  Obiano, however, said the Abia State born political leader acquitted himself creditably at the Senate where he served for three terms, describing him as a first class senator.
