Two friends drown in Ekiti River

Two friends, a man and a lady, yesterday drowned in Ureje river in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. It was learnt that the incident occurred when they tried to swim in the river.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Sunday Abutu, said the victims died while trying to swim in the river.

Abutu explained that the police were invited after the incident had happened.

He added that their bodies had been recovered and taken to the morgue of the University Teaching Hospital in Ado-Ekiti.

However, a source said the two friends jumped into the Ureje River while trying to evade arrest from security agents who trailed some people to the area described as den of immoral acts.

Information also had it that young men and women usually visit the river side to swim and engage in immoral acts

The Chairperson, Landlords Association, Bamigboye community, Deaconess Phebian Fatuase, said “some youths have converted the area to a den where they carry out criminal activities such as smoking Indian hemp, prostitution and initiation into cult groups

Fatuase added that the community had made several attempts to stop the youth from perpetrating nefarious activities in the area.

She stated that the two persons who drowned in the river were said to have jumped into the dam on sighting security agents but died in the process because they could not swim. – New Telegraph
