EUROPEAN countries need to take in more migrants from Lesbos and other overcrowded Greek islands, UN agencies say.

“We need more relocation commitments in these trying times while the EU establishes a more predictable and effective system based on responsibility-sharing,” International Organisation for Migration Chief Antonio Vitorino said in a statement.

The UN Refugee Agency’s (UNHCR) representative in Greece, Philippe Leclerc, said that the number of people in migrant reception centres on Greek islands must be reduced and living conditions must be improved.

A proposal for an EU pact on migration and asylum set to be presented by the European Commission next week should be based on efficient procedures and solidarity among EU countries, he said.

“It is hoped that this opportunity will be seized,” he added. (dpa/NAN)
