THE UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has on Monday demanded the end of structural racism against black people.

Bachelet said that people with African roots are victims of structural racism in many parts of the world.

“Centuries of violence and discrimination have created structures in many countries in which black people are systematically disadvantaged.

“The UN Human Rights Council commissioned the report after the violent 2020 death of George Floyd.

“It was intended to examine whether and how black people are disadvantaged, not only in terms of individual discrimination but also in terms of contact with the police and authorities.

“Floyd, who was African-American, died in May 2020 during an arrest, in which a police officer pushed his knee into Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes,’’ Bachelet said.

She said the officer was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 22.5 years in prison.

She called on all states to stop denying and start dismantling racism to end impunity and build trust.

According to her, in many countries, people with African roots are socially, politically and economically marginalised.

“Especially in North and Latin America and in Europe, a disproportionate number of them live in poverty and find it difficult to access education, health services, work, decent housing and clean water, ’’ she said. (dpa/NAN)
