The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has cautioned youths on peddling and drug abuse, and enumerated several of their side effects.

Mr Jonah Achema, the Head of Public Affairs, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

Achema decried the current rate at which underage youths got involved in illicit drug activities and the tendencies to kill, destroy their lives and careers.

“It is disheartening that children at tender age already have problem using drugs.

“Being drug free is the only option. Nobody needs to be begged to stay off drugs as the end result is death.

“The consequences are intimidating. Your health, career and your life is at risk when you take or peddle drugs,’’ he said.

He reiterated that the agency would not relent in its efforts to rid the country of hard drugs, adding that several campaigns had been held in this regard.

“We have two types of mandate. One is to suppress the supply, and two is to suppress the demand. We are not only trained to trail these perpetrators but to also be ahead of them.

“We have had campaigns on several occasions. We have partnership with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), National Youth service Corps (NYSC), National Union of Road transport workers (NURTW) and many others on the dangers of this menace.

“We do not intend to stop there, as our plan is to have a drug-free society,” he said.

He said that the agency would ensure that demand and supply of illicit drugs were reduced to the barest minimum.

“These merchants of death are advised to give up the business or continue to experience losses and a date with jail,” he said. (NAN)
