MS Audrey Azoulay, Director-General, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) says the organisation is committed to reducing inequalities in engineering.

Azoulay said this on Monday in her message on the commemoration of World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development 2024.

In November 2019, UNESCO’s General Conference proclaimed March 4 as World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development to raise awareness on the role of engineering in modern life.

The theme of the Day for 2024 is “Engineering Solutions for a Sustainable World”.

The director general noted that in terms of gender, only 28 per cent of engineering graduates were women.

She added that in terms of geography, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, the number of engineers was lower than in any other region of the world.

She said a collective approach to engineering would be essential in the years to come.

Azoulay also noted that it would take lots of energy to rebuild more wisely and more sustainably, to meet the challenges of the world.

She said this was the message for the future that UNESCO sought to convey on World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development.

Citing Jules Verne’s novel, The Mysterious Island, the D-G said that just as one of the characters improved life on the island with his skills, engineers were constantly innovating to meet the challenges of the world.

”To build more inclusive growth, to develop renewable energies and to face climate change, to guarantee a fairer and more sustainable world, we need more than ever this scientific creativity at the service of all.

”That is what this day means, recognising the magnitude of the contribution engineers make to our world and to the goals of the 2030 Agenda.

”However, this is also the spirit of the Recommendation on Open Science, adopted by UNESCO’s Member States in November 2021.

”In order to be effective, engineering must also be open, inclusive and collaborative,” Azoulay said. (NAN)
