CHIGOZIE Jude Odum, a university lecturer with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has been suspended on the basis of allegation of sexual harassment made against him by a female student.

Realnews confirmed that the university authority in a letter dated 15th February, 2021 to Odum, stated his offence and asked that he leaves his duty post immediately, pending the outcome of investigation of the matter.

Until now, Odun was a lecturer in the Department of Archeology and Tourism.

It could be recalled that in recent time, cases of sexual harassment have increased in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

According to a published study of sexual harassment in three selected private faith-based universities in Ogun-State, South-West Nigeria  by Omonijo, Dare Ojo, Uche, Onyekwere Chizaram Oliver, Nwadiafor, Kanayo Louis and Rotimi, Omolola, through employing opinions of female students and members of staff through questionnaire and in-depth interview, the study revealed that majority of female students experienced sexual harassment on campus, but most of them disinclined to report their cases to the school management.

Drawing on the recorded data between 2008 and 2012, the study also revealed that 14 members of staff of the selected universities, were accused of sexual harassment.
