THE Coordinator, World Health Organisation, WHO, Anambra State, Chukwumuanya Igboekwu, says that the mandate of the WHO is to support governments at all levels in strengthening healthcare system for optimal service delivery.

Igboekwu said after the five-day workshop organised by the EU/WHO for health workers in Awka that the EU/WHO had been partnering the state in various health programmes across the state with the objective of achieving universal health coverage for Ndi Anambra.

According to him, WHO is the guardian of local government public health and the mandate is to support them at all levels, in strengthening the health system; this is what we have been doing over a long time in Anambra.

“We are currently supporting the state to revitalise Primary Healthcare as well as supporting them to build strong institutions of health governance and in managing disease outbreaks and COVID-19 response.

“The routine immunisation and this workshop on District Health Information System, DHIS, Data Analytics have a very strong component of routine immunisation; likewise, other health indicators captured in the DHIS.

“So, we are further building capacities; have previously built the capacity for programme officers and we just concluded building the capacity of Monitoring and Evaluation Officers, M&E,’’ he said.

Igboekwu explained that M&E was the primary custodians of data in healthcare facilities, departments in Ministry of Health and Primary Healthcare Agency.

“You can see that part of the assessment, evaluation of the training was for us to hear directly from the participants and that is what we demonstrated during the training.

“We randomly selected participants across LGA’s who gave testimonies on the impact of the training and how they feel the training will help them to address some issues in order to do their jobs better.

“So the evaluation of participants shows that they have improved on their competency, skills; they will do better in their various places of assignment.

“One of the important aspects of the programme is the practical parts that involve daily issues faced by the M&E officers, their challenges when navigating through the DHIS platform.

“The training has been useful because it came at a time that Nigeria is fully embracing the DHIS 2 as a platform for collecting various health data,’’ he said.
