Ebelechukwu Obiano, wife of Anambra State governor, has called on women to always display good character, be truthful and dedicated.

The governor’s wife, represented by Mitchelle Onugbolu, gave the charge at a summit organised by Aguata Women Interactive Forum at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Bar Centre, High Court Complex, Aguata.

“Women are like golden fish that do not have a hiding place. Let us be hardworking, truthful and of good character. And let us support other women who are in political leadership,’’ Obiano said.

She pointed at her effort at helping the physically challenged persons. “We are sponsoring babies born with cleft lips deformity for free surgeries and treatment.

“We have been providing artificial hind limbs to those in need of them. So, I urge you people to throw your weight behind your fellow women,’’ Obiano said.

In her keynote address, Ndidi Mezue, the commissioner for Social Welfare, Children and Women Affairs, who was represented by Chinwe Umeri, thanked Mrs Obiano whom she said made it possible for women to have a say in Anambra governance.

“Osodieme as is popularly known, made it possible for women in elective and appointive positions to have a say in the governance of Anambra,’’ Mezue noted.

Mezue urged the women to register in the ongoing voter registration exercise in order to obtain their Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs, for election purposes.

“I urge you to ensure that you registered in the ongoing voter registration to be able to support our fellow women, who will be contesting in the upcoming elections,’’ Mezue said.

In her welcome address, Chinelo Ezeilo, an aspirant for Anambra state House of Assembly for Aguata 11 constituency, one of the founders and conveners of AWIF, urged the participants to take up roles that were more challenging.

“Propelled by economic challenges, women all over the world, including Nigeria, have begun to take up roles that are more challenging, geared toward economic and political emancipation.

“There is therefore, an urgent need to prepare ourselves for the daunting tasks ahead,’’ Ezeilo said.

Helen Mmaduabuchi, a co-founder of the Movement, said that Aguata Women Interactive Forum was a non-governmental organisation formed by three persons, Mmaduabuchi, Lolo Ezeilo and Suzzy Michael.

“The NGO is aimed at bringing Aguata women together in order to harness their potential and help them come out of their shells to create formidable network of progressive-minded Aguata women, who will share ideas that will lead to the development of women achievers in the  area,’’ Mmaduabuchi said.

There was an award of ‘The Golden Mother of the Nigerian Child’ to the governor’s wife. Others awardees were Stella Odua, a serving senator, Mezue and Nikky Ugochukwu.

Five widows were presented a piece of wrapper each.
