EBELECHUKWU Obiano, wife of Anambra State governor, has called on parents to control early marriages of their female children by either engaging them positively in institutions of higher learning or exposing them to skills acquisition initiative.

Obiano made the call at Ifite-Ogwari, Ayamelum council area while inaugurating a skills acquisition centre, built by Uchenna Okafor, member representing Ayamelum in the Anambra State House of Assembly, for his constituents.

According to her, the days are gone when female children are considered less important to their male counterparts.

She noted that the females had proved that they were as important as their male counterparts.

The skills acquisition centre was set up essentially to train indigent persons on several skills such as computer education, bead-making, hair dressing and sewing.

Obiano, expressed satisfaction at the completion of the project, stressing, that such kind gestures had shown that Okafor had the interest of his people at heart.

She, however, called on other lawmakers in the state to borrow a leaf from him by ensuring that dividends of democracy reach the people they represent as planned by the present administration.

Earlier, Okafor had urged the people to participate actively in free skills acquisition training so as to make his dream for them a reality.

He explained that the project, which was in line with the pet project of Governor’s wife, was born out of the feeling he had for his people and as part of his support to CAFE initiative.

Okafor reiterated the commitment of APGA led-government to ensuring high standards of living for the people.

In a related development, Obiano called on rural women to embrace formal education and skills acquisition for self-reliance.

She made the call at Anaku, during her visit to Ayamelum Council Area in line with the ongoing Caring Family Enhancement Initiative, CAFE, tour of the local government areas.

She said that evening and weekend academic classes would soon commence in Ayamelum LGA to enable married women in the area to acquire academic knowledge without neglecting their various homes.

While reminding the women that acquiring formal education was not a ticket for break up of their homes, she said that education was an avenue to empower them, in order to make them more productive members of the society.

She urged the women to make adequate use of the skills acquisition centres built by CAFE at Anaku and the centre at Ifite Ogwari built by  Okafor.

She expressed satisfaction with the women from the area, who were recently employed to work as cooks in government-owned schools under the nationwide Home Grown School Feeding, HGSF, programme.

Obiano called on women with passion to work as teachers in the skills acquisition centres to come forward and make their interest known to the relevant authority.

She expressed her appreciation of the people of Ayamelum and the various groups present over the warm reception accorded her during the visit and thanked them for their support to the Obiano-led administration urging them to say no to unscrupulous politicians ahead the upcoming gubernatorial election.

In his speech, Ken Okolo, chairman, Transition Committee, Ayamelum Council Area,   said that the name, “Ebelechukwu Obiano’’, has been written in Gold in Ayamelum’, and praised her for the steady flow of their own share of the democracy dividends.

He noted that Ayamelum had always come first in supporting Obiano government and assured her of their total support for the governor during the Nov. 18 election.

On behalf of the women of Ayamelum Council Area, wife of the chairman transition committee, Uju Okolo hailed the good works of the Obiano government.

He said that the people of the area gained a lot and assured her of their support for APGA, while pledging their readiness to deliver Ayamelum LGA.

Victoria Chikwelu, commissioner for Social Welfare, Children and Women Affairs, said Obiano had left an indelible mark in Ayamelum Community.

“This is the time for us to ensure even distribution of the democracy dividends in the state.’’

In his remarks, Ikechukwu Onyeabor, special adviser to governor on Chieftaincy and Town Union Matters, on behalf of all political appointees assured the governor’s wife that Ayamelum Council Area was not a campaign ground for any other party.

The occasion, which was graced by many associations, also featured the distribution of bags of rice, school bags, parental kits to the less privileged by the wife of the Governor.
