Jigawa Government has partnered with “Save the Children’’ a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) to train rural women on how to grow and process food crops with nutritional values for their children.

The Food and Nutrition Programme’s Focal Person in Guri, Mallam Mohammad Garba, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.

He said that the beneficiaries who were 33 in number were drawn from Adiyani and Guri Local Government Areas of the state.

He added that the selected women were trained in planting of maize, moringa seeds, groundnuts and sweet potato for maximum yields at Adiyani Hospital Farm Centre.

He said that “Save the Children has been providing food supplements to malnourished children in Guri, Birnin-Kudu and Gwiwa areas.

“ The NGO later decided to expand the programme to include providing seeds to women for the cultivation of food crops, especially sweet potato which is rich in vitamin A.

“When the crops became ready for consumption, we recently organised food demonstration to teach the women how best to prepare nutritious foods with the items for their children.

“The facilitators taught the women how to make porridge with potato and moringa leaves and prepare pap with maize and groundnuts.

“It is expected that beneficiaries of the training will also teach others what they learned so that together they will tackle the problem of malnutrition.’’

Garba said that parents of children with acute malnutrition must ensure that they regularly give them the food supplements to prevent measure against severe malnutrition.

“The Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) tape is used to assess the nutritional status in children between the ages of six and 59 months.

“The yellow colour on the tape indicates acute malnutrition, the red colour indicates severe malnutrition, while the green colour shows normal condition,” he said. (NAN)
