THE Women in Da’awa group, an Islamic NGO, on Wednesday donated relief materials worth millions of Naira to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPS) in Zamfara.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the relief materials comprised grains, clothing materials, cosmetics and toiletries.
Presenting the items to the beneficiaries in Gusau, the representative of the National Ameera of the group, Hajiya Aishatu Salihu, said they were only fulfilling their religious obligation of assisting victims of banditry.
“We learned that majority of the affected victims are women and children and most of them are facing serious challenges.
“Although, our main work is Da’awa, but we are also for charity, we consider it as a duty to assist vulnerable groups in the society.
“The incident that happened to these people may happen to anyone of us; therefore it is necessary for us as Muslims to unite in assisting our brothers and sisters.
“Apart from preaching, we also have a programme where we source fund from Muslim Ummah to give support in this regard,” she said.
She urged well-meaning individuals, philanthropic organisations and other public spirited people to render assistance to the victims.
Earlier, the state Ameera of the group, Hajiya Hassana Sarkin-Yaki, thanked their national secretariat for the donation.
She said that hundreds of IDPS from eight local government areas of the state, who are the most affected by insecurity, have been selected for the gesture.
She listed the affected local government areas as Anka, Bungudu, Birnin-Magaji, Maradun, Maru, Shinkafi, Tsafe and Zurmi.
She also commended the Chairman of Gusau Local Government Council, Alhaji Ibrahim Tanko, for supporting the activities of the group.
NAN further reports that over 30,000 IDPs who were forced to leave their villages due to fear of armed bandits, are currently living in various temporary camps across the state. -NAN
