THE United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Monday pledged to assist community radio stations in Nigeria to deliver on their mandate.
The UNESCO Country Representative to Nigeria, Mr Abdourahamane Diallo disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja, to mark the World Radon Day.
NAN report that World Radio Day is celebrated annually every Feb. 13 to mark the pivotal role of radio.
The theme for this year’s celebration titled, ‘Radio: A century informing, entertaining and educating,’ “reflects the remarkable achievement of radio as a means of communication and information for over 100 years, despite the advent of social media.
Diallo said: “Few of them will be supported with capacity building on digitisation, content development in addressing certain issues in the society.
“We can provide contents that can be used for free by the community radio to help the station to communicate in local dialect.
“However, we should be mindful of our limit as community radio to avoid sensationalistic content and propaganda.
“We can have a community radio to educate the people and talk about health, climate change, agriculture and other issues that could help develop the community’’.
Diallo said Nigeria is a champion on the issue of Media Information Literacy and UNESCO will also want to be a champion in the region. (NAN)
