REV. Fr. Peter Attah, the Chaplain of Congregation of Mission, Daughters of Charity, Saint Vincent De Paul Hospital, Kubwa, FCT, has urged patients to trust God for healing in spite of orthodox medications administered on them.

Attah, who is also the priest of the congregation, made the call in Abuja on Thursday in commemoration of the 2021 World Day of the Sick.

Feb. 11 is World Day of the Sick, an observation started by Pope John Paul II for believers to offer prayers for those suffering from illnesses.

Pope John Paul II initiated the day in 1992 to encourage people to pray for those who suffered from illnesses and for their caregivers.

The chaplain, therefore, said “today is a day set aside to encourage the sick not to give up, but to surrender their care to God.

“God always proves Himself in the lives of people who trust in Him. In spite of their sufferings, God cares for them.”

According to him, health is a treasure, hence people tend to give up on life when their health is challenged.

The chaplain said that some instruments used in attending to patients were blessed alongside the health workers,
which God used to heal the sick if they had faith.

He added that “if God is not on our side, no matter the expertise, we will still be deficient in attending to patients.”

Rev. Fr. Dr Emmanuel Okwara, the officiating priest at the event, said healing of a patient required faith.

Okwara explained that “faith is letting go of oneself and allowing God to intervene; healing, when all hope is lost, is an act of miracle.”

He added that patients needed to connect their faith to medications they received “because when the mindset is positive, physical medications will
be effective.”

He noted that all humans were sick either spiritually, emotionally or physically but that people needed to be spiritually healthy
because there was eternal life after the one on earth. He urged patients to purge themselves of sin that could cost them eternal life in God’s kingdom.
