The Akwa Ibom Commissioner of Police, Mr Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, said on Thursday that over 100 youths had surrendered their arms in the troubled Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom.

Ogunjemilusi made the disclosure during an interactive session with newsmen in Uyo.

He noted that the police command was doing everything possible to ensure peace and stability in the local government areas.

According to him, the youth started surrendering their arms since Monday. Sept. 24.

“As I speak with you, we have recorded over 100 youths surrendering their arms and they have agreed to documentation. We have profiled them,’’ Ogunjemilusi said.

The commissioner said that the police was in a peace process and disarmament of the youth in those local governments.

“His Excellency has agreed to set the ball of reconciliation rolling and we are in the process of reconciliation. Many of the aggrieved youths are coming out to surrender their arms,’’ he said.

The commissioner said that the peace process would be concluded in two weeks, adding that the public would soon witness unprecedented peace and security in those local government areas.

“We wish there is improvement in their response and we have been guaranteed by their leaders that they will cooperate fully with us, ‘’ the commissioner said.

Ogunjemilusi, however, said that the crisis started from two cult groups – Vikings and Debalm – who were at each others’ throat and which later degenerated to free- for- all-fight.

He said that the command had trained its personnel on successful investigation and prosecution of crime in the state.

The commissioner called on the public to always give useful information in order to apprehend criminals in the state.

NAN reports that the aggrieved youths assembled at Central School, Ikot Akpankuk, Ukanafun, to surrender their arms for documentation.

NAN also reports that Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo crisis which began about a year ago, had led to hardship, insecurity and loss of lives in the area. (NAN)
