GOV. Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State, on Monday, submitted a bill to the State House of Assembly seeking to give legal backing to the Nasarawa State Agency for Youth Empowerment Scheme (NAYES).

Speaker of the assembly, Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, disclosed this during plenary in Lafia.

This followed a motion by the Majority Leader, Alhaji Tanko Tunga (APC-Awe North), seconded by Mr Peter Mbucho (PDP-Akwanga North), the Minority Leader of the House.

According to the Speaker, the move by Al-Makura for the establishment of the scheme is aimed at reducing the rate of youth unemployment and restiveness in the state.

Balarabe-Abdullahi assured the people of the state that the assembly would continue to partner with the executive to make laws that would have direct impact on the lives of the citizenry.

He said the assembly would ensure expeditious passage of the bill, in view of its importance to the wellbeing of the youth, and solicited for the people’s support for both the executive and the legislature, for effective governance.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 4,500 youths in the state have been engaged by the Al-Makura-led administration with a monthly stipend of N10, 000.

Some of the youths were engaged as sanitary inspectors, community watchers, traffic marshals and environment guards, among others.

NAN further learned that the bill was initiated by the governor as way of engaging the NAYES staff permanently in the state and ensuring continuity of the programme. (NAN)
