GOVERNOR Babagana Zulum of Borno has directed principals of public schools to compile list of challenges facing their schools ahead of Oct. 25 schools’ resumption in the state.

The governor gave the directive in a statement in Maiduguri on Monday by his Special Adviser on Communications and Strategy, Malam Isa Gusau,

Gusau stated that the governor gave the directive at a meeting in Maiduguri with principals of 84 secondary schools.

He urged them to feel free to tell him the problems facing public secondary school system in Borno.

Zulum said “I have been to several schools, and each time I asked, some of you (principals) found it difficult to explain the problems in your schools.

“I was later made to understand that if you tell me the truth, you would either be transferred somewhere you wouldn’t like, or somehow be victimised. Please I beg all of you to tell me the truth.

“Let us tell ourselves the truth so that we can improve Borno’s public education from where we are now. I am pleading with you to please be honest.

“Education is the bedrock of any development. Without functional education system, we shall continue to experience this Boko Haram insurgency in Borno.

“Look at the kind of students we are graduating from our public secondary schools, most of them do not qualify for admission into universities.”

He assured the principals of state government’s commitment to improving training and welfare of teachers and school administrators.

The governor said only pupils who passed the examination by securing the cut-off mark would be eligible for admission into the first year of Junior Secondary Schools (JSS 1). (NAN)
