The Inter-party Advisory Committee (IPAC), Bauchi state chapter, has commended the performance of security agents, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the media, following the successful conduct of the Bauchi South senatorial by-election.
Alhaji Musa Mato, the State Secretary of IPAC, gave the commendation on Thursday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi.
He said that the exercise was peaceful due to the transparent conduct of the INEC and the absence of intimidation of political opponents by security agents, as well as the balanced coverage by the media.
The IPAC scribe said if other stakeholders could sustain the level of professionalism exhibited by INEC, security agents and the media, in the conduct of the by-election, the rating of Nigerian democracy would improve.
“The INEC, security agencies and the media have played critical roles in overseeing the process of the by-election to ensure that it was credible and efficient,” he said.
He said that he was particularly impressed that there was no form of molestation of voters by any security personnel.
The scribe commended stakeholders for collaborating effectively to secure the environment that makes the election process credible and free of violence.
He lauded the media for playing the role of educating, and informing the public on the election process without creating chaos.
The IPAC secretary, who is also the state Chairman of United Progressive Party (UPP), commended the parties and their supporters for acting responsibly during and after the election.
He, however, appealed to INEC to correct the little anomalies observed during the election before the 2019 general elections.
News Agency of Nigeria reports that INEC had declared Lawal Yahaya Gumau, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the by-election into the Bauchi South Senatorial district.
The returning officer of the election, Ahmed Fadam, who supervised the final collation of the results, declared Gumau, winner of the election having polled 119,489 votes to beat the PDP candidate, Ladan Salihu, who had 50,256 votes. (NAN)
