THE Federal Government has assured host communities adversely affected environmentally or otherwise by the construction of the Lagos-Ibadan rail modernization project of assistance.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Director, Press and Public Relations of the Ministry of Transportation,  Eric Orjiekwe in Abuja.
Minister of Transportation  Rotimi Amaechi gave the assurance while inspecting work on the project, in preparation for the commissioning in June.
Amaechi further assured communities that issues of erosion or flooding occasioned by the construction will be addressed.
He directed the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ahani to ensure that the communities are visited to ascertain the level of impact and possible interventions.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 156km Lagos-Ibadan railway costs 1.5 billion dollars and runs from Lagos to Ibadan, the second-largest city in the country’s southwest, and, subsequently, with additional funding, on to the northern cities of Nigeria.

It is funded by a 1.3 billion dollars loan from the Export-Import Bank of China and about 182 million dollars from the Nigerian government.

The Lagos-Ibadan line is a critical section of the broader 11.1 billion-dollar-2,733km  Kano standard-gauge north-south railway being constructed by Chinese engineering giant the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC.) (NAN).
