NO fewer than 10 people were killed while nine are still missing after a landslide slammed into houses overnight in Indonesia’s East Java province, an official said on Monday.
Rescuers unearthed 10 bodies and two survivors after the rain-triggered landslide in Nganjuk district on Sunday evening, the District Chief, Novi Hidayat, said.
“Twenty-one people were buried. We managed to pull out 12, including two who are still alive,” Novi said, adding that the search for the nine still missing was continuing.
The National Disaster Management Agency earlier said 14 people were injured in the landslide.
Elsewhere in the province, flash floods hit nine villages, inundating homes with water as high as 1 metre, the agency said.
Deadly floods and landslides are common in Indonesia during the rainy season from October to April.
