NO fewer than 1,000 residents of Onitsha and surrounding towns took part in the February edition of the monthly 10 kilometers “Walk for Life”, held in the commercial city of the state on Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise which was the first to hold in Onitsha was the fourth in the series in the state.

Tony Oli, Chairman of Anambra Sports Development Commission (ASDC) who led the walk, expressed satisfaction with the success of the event.

Oli said the Walk for Life attracted individuals  from both the government and private sectors as well as athletes.

He congratulated them for completing the whole stretch of the walk, saying they had done well for themselves and their health.

He said the idea of bringing the walk to Onitsha was to raise awareness on healthy living through easy tasks like walking and encouraged them to make it a habit.

“The turnout was impressive, I thank the over 1,000 Onitsha residents who took part in this edition of our monthly 10 kilometers walk, known as Walk for Life.

“This is part of our programme that is aimed at promoting healthy living and long life, please make it part of you,” he said.

Uche Nworah, the Managing Director, Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), described the experience as awesome.

Nworah lauded ASDC and its partners for creating the greatest effect without much distortion of social activities.

He said routine exercises could take care of simple ailments and encouraged people across the state to take time to exercise.

John igboka, a national athletics coach, said such an event was a veritable ground for discovery of hidden talented athletes.

Igboka said sports not only have the benefit of enhancing quality of life but could shoot one to fame and fortune.

“It gives strength, helps one build stamina and can make the serious ones champions,” he said.

NAN reports that officials of Federal Road Safety Commission, Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade and Anambra Traffic Management Agency were around to control traffic and ensure orderliness. (NAN)
