Fourteen people were killed in a road accident in central Tanzania on Monday, police said.

The accident occurred when a minibus crashed into a lorry while trying to overtake another vehicle, Singida Regional Police Commander Sweetbert Njewika said.

“Our preliminary checks have shown that the accident was largely caused by the driver of the minibus, who did not observe safety rules and overtook another car without making sure that the road ahead of him is clear,” he said.

Accidents are common on Tanzania’s roads, especially in the lead-up to the holiday period. (dpa/NAN)
