143 entries to compete for 2023 NLNG Prize for Literature

THE 2023 edition of The Nigeria Prize for Literature, sponsored by the Nigeria LNG Limited, NLNG, has received 143 entries.

Prof. Ezeigbo Akachi, chairperson of the advisory board of the NLNG prize for literature, disclosed this at the handing-over ceremony on Wednesday in Lagos.

According to her, this year’s prize for literature will focus on Drama genre and the winner of the annual event, which began 19 years ago, will receive a grand prize of $100,000.

She noted also that the judges will work independently and will submit a selected list of 50 out of the 143 entries. “After which they will submit another list of 25 from the 50, while 15 will be selected from the list of 25 from which 11 will be picked from which the short list of 3 will also be selected.”

Other members of Prof. Akachi’s advisory board are Prof. Olu Obafemi and Prof. Ahmed Yerima.

Receiving the entries from the advisory board, Prof Ameh Akoh, chairman of this year’s panel of judges, expressed commitment to ensure that excellence is applied all through the process of determining the winner.

Other members of the panel of judges are Prof Osita Catherine and Prof. Rashidat Liman.

In his speech at the event, Andy Odeh, NLNG’s General Manager for External Relations and Sustainable Development, thanked all the members of the Advisory Board, the panel of Judges and the members of the media for the continuous support and commitment towards ensuring the sustenance of the award.

The NLNG literary award includes the Prize for Literature, the Prize for Literary Criticism and the Prize for Science.

However, the Prize for Literature, which has been described as Africa’s most prestigious literary award, rotates yearly amongst four literary categories of prose fiction, poetry, drama, and children’s literature.
