ONLY 17 athletics will represent Nigeria at the International Association of Athletics Federations, IAAF, World Championships, later this month. The Team Nigeria is, thus, expected to depart the country for Beijing, China, on August 18.

Omatseye Nesiama, technical director, Team Nigeria to the IAAF World, who disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Wednesday, August 12, said the team would consist of 14 women and three men who would compete for laurels at the game. He said the AFN decided to take only 17 athletes it felt could win medals for the country.

“We decided to send a more compact team in order not to just go for a jamboree. In addition, we wanted the athletes that have more potential to win laurels mainly at the AAG to avoid distraction of the World Championships and concentrate more on the Games,” the director said.

Besides, he said serious consideration was made on the athletes’ current form especially in the individual events.

The Championships is scheduled for August 22 to August 30 in Beijing, and 14 women and three men would jostle for laurels on behalf of the country at the event.
