180 personnel to participate in 21km marathon route competition

The Defence Headquarters says about 180 personnel of the Armed Forces and security agencies will participate in the second edition of its upcoming 21 kilometre Half Marathon route competition holding in Abuja.

The Chairman, Organising Committee for the marathon, retired Maj.-Gen. Sarduana Davies, disclosed this at a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja.

Davies said that the championship with the theme :” Racing to bond”would hold on June 30 in Abuja.

He said that the event was meant to bring a “firm unity” among the force.

” The aim of this championship is to unite all members of the armed forces to have cohesion among us to face the internal security challenges we are facing.

” The essence of the championship is to get a firm unity among us as we are serving the same purpose; this would afford us the opportunity to meet and interact among the rank and file, ” he said.

He said that a lot of friendship and bonding would be made among the participants during the event, adding that all arrangements had been made in terms of security along the route.

Sarduana  said that the marathon would start from Dei-Dei pedestrian bridge to Aguyi Ironsi Cantonment Sports Complex Asokoro, Abuja, adding there would be presentation of trophies and laurels at the end of the event.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that participants at the marathon will include: personnel of the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Customs Service and Federal Road Safety Corps, among others.(NAN)
