2-day workshop on poverty mapping survey opens in Asaba

DELTA government is organising a two-day workshop on ‘Poverty Mapping Survey for statisticians in the 25 local government areas of the state as part of efforts to eradicate poverty in the state.
Declaring the workshop open in Asaba on Friday, the Delta Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr Sonny Ekedayen, said that the survey would cover education, health and standard of living.
Ekedayen noted that the survey will not only benefit the people of the state but the entire nation and the continent.
The Commissioner, who was represented by the Director of Budget in the Ministry, Mr Thomson Olije, said: ” As statistical personnel, we cannot overemphasise the importance of this poverty mapping survey.
”Poverty is multi-dimensional. There are different areas of poverty and I also understand that the survey will cover education, health and standard of living. ”
Ekedayen also said that the survey was crucial, especially with the ever growing population and the struggle government was going through to reduce poverty as well as eradicate hunger.
He therefore urged the participants to seize the opportunity to provide accurate data in carrying out the exercise so that the ‘MORE Agenda’ of the State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, could be effectively defined.
”I have faith in your professional expertise and experience in executing the task successfully, ” he added.
Ekedayen commended the National Bureau of Statistics for its support in terms of training of personnel, recalled that this was the third time the survey was being conducted in the state.
In her remarks, the Director of Statistics in the Ministry, Ms Nkechi Maduemeze, said that the survey was very crucial to planning in the state.
According to her, it is one of the most important surveys after the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the state.
She recalled that the second edition of the survey, which was conducted in 2020, enabled the state to secure the Safety net grant from the Federal Government .
Also, Mr Sahed Bakare . Principal statistician, Dept of Demography and Household statistics, National Bureau of Statistics Abuja who is the Lead facilitator, gave an overview of poverty mapping during the training programme.
Meanwhile, some of the participants at the workshop commended the state government for the initiative.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 87 field officers of the ministry were selected from the 25 local government areas of the state for the training programme. NAN
