TWO unemployed men on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing and receiving a stolen generator battery, valued at N40,000.

The defendants, Lateef Balogun, 20, and Isah Aminu, 29, both without fixed addresses, are being tried for conspiracy, stealing and receiving a stolen item.

The prosecutor, Insp Glory Goodday, told the court that the offences were committed on Nov. 26 at Butter Burst Bread Company, Coker road, Ilupeju, Lagos.

According to Goodday, there has been cases of stealing from the company for a while, and on this day, the security man caught the first defendant, jumping through the fence.

The prosecutor said that the first defendant was apprehended and confessed to have been coming to steal with some others at large.

He said that the defendant confessed to have stolen the generator battery and mentioned the second defendant as the one he sold it to.

“The company is owned by the complainant, Mrs Morinsola Ladipo,” he said.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened Sections 287, 328 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mr A. T. Ameen, admitted the defendants to bail of N100,000 each with one surety in like sum.

Ameen adjourned the case until Feb. 5 for mention.
