A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday remanded two men at Ikoyi Correctional Centre for allegedly stealing a Bajaj motorcycle, valued at N217,000.
The defendants: Sheyi Adeleye, 20, and Tobi Tajudeen, 21, pleaded guilty to a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing and disorderly conduct.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Nov. 21, near Ann’s Barracks, at Sabo area of Yaba, Lagos State.
She said that the defendants stole a red Bajaj motorcycle with registration number: KSF 200 QL from the complainant, Mr Sulaimon Sanni after he had given them a lift.
The prosecutor said that the defendants had threatened Sanni with a dagger and then stole his motorcycle.
“My Lord, it was a police officer on patrol who heard the shout of the complainant that knocked the defendants off the motorcycle before they could ride off with it,’’ she said.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 411, 168 (1) and 280 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates a three-year jail term for stealing.
NAN also reports that Section 411 carries two years for conspiracy while Section 168 prescribes three months’ jail time or fine for disorderly conduct.
Chief Magistrate Oluwatoyin Oghere ordered that the defendants be kept at the Ikoyi Correctional Facility, pending a review of the facts of the case and sentencing.
Oghere adjourned the case until Dec. 16.
