Elijah Onyeagba, a candidate seeking to represent Anaocha, Dunukofia and Njikoka Federal Constituency in Anambra, has urged the people of the South-East to be part of the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.
Onyeagba, who is running on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), told newsmen on Sunday that Buhari remained popular in spite of wrong perception about him in the South-East.
The chattered banker urged Anambra people support the APC as they had been on the fringes for too long; adding that governance was all about the ability to get the best for your people.
Onyeagba said the people should change their perception about the president, noting that it was “wrong to see Buhari as a Fulani man who hates the people of South-East”.
“Just as APC is unpopular here, it is the same way All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) is unpopular outside the borders of Anambra, being smart is voting for those that will not be minority at the national stage.
“The Second Niger Bridge has been a campaign project but recently the president approved N206 billion for its construction, and the Enugu-Onitsha expressway is undergoing quality reconstruction.
“Sukuk bond proceed is being used to fix federal roads across the zone, including Enugu-Porthrcourt roads; we have had a fair share of appointments, compare these with the less 200, 000 votes the president got here.
“President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) is a phenomenon that will not be easy to oust, I am not sure any opposition can generate the required number to defeat him, I have a feeling he will win, so let’s be part of the victory,” he said.
On his ambition, he said he was the best man for the job because of his versed understanding of the collective challenges of the constituency.
He said he was undaunted about running on APC in state that was dominated by APGA, stressing that his credibility, capacity, and acceptability would count for him.
“I agree with you that APC is not popular here but that is largely because it has been misrepresented and de-marketed here.
“This election is not going to be party politics; credibility, capacity, qualification are what will matter.
“It will be wrong to say that unqualified people should represent us because they belong to a party we believe in, our people must understand that mediocrity should give way to merit.
“I am in a better position to get the most of what is in the federal budget for my people.
“Principal offices and committee heads are shared on the basis of majority party and the biggest minority; the most popular party here is a minority within the minority, so we must hook on to the national grid,” he said.
Onyeagba is an Economics graduate of University of Nigeria Nsukka, M.BA Finance holder from University of Calabar and MSc Applied Economics from American University Washington.
He is a Chattered Banker, public servant and real estate developer. (NAN)
